Urology Group, P.C.
Welcome,

Urology Group, P.C. was founded in 1948 and has provided urologic care to the greater New Haven area ever since.  Its goal has always been and continues to be the treatment of urologic illnesses using the most modern techniques available today.  We strive to achieve this in an effective and compassionate manner.  As the field has evolved, Urology Group, P.C. has adapted its practice of urology to best serve the needs of its patients.

Diagnostic studies done in the office include: cystoscopy, transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy, and urodynamics.  Vasectomy, biofeedback and sacral nerve stimulation for urinary incontinence, and minimally invasive procedures for BPH such as TUNA and Microwave thermotherapy are also offered as an outpatient service.

Laprascopic as well as traditional open kidney surgery is performed, and robotic radical prostatectomy is available for prostate cancer patients.  All physicians in the group treat urinary stones by shock wave lithotripsy, endoscopy with laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous surgery depending on the patient’s needs.  TURP and laser vaporization of the prostate are performed on patients with BPH who are not candidates for minimally invasive treatment.

All Urology Group,  P.C. doctors are board certified by the American Board of Urology and are members of the American Urologic Association.  We have a dedicated staff, many of whom have been with the practice for over 10 years.  Office locations include Hamden, New Haven, and Guilford.  The doctors perform surgery at the Hospital of St. Raphael, and Yale New Haven Hospital.

Urology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, a knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered.

In recognition of the wide scope of urology, the American Urological Association has identified seven sub-specialty areas:

  1. Pediatric Urology
  2. Urologic Oncology (cancer)
  3. Renal Transplantation
  4. Male Infertility
  5. Calculi (urinary tract stones)
  6. Female Urology (urinary incontinence and pelvic outlet relaxation disorders)
  7. Neurourology (voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and erectile dysfunction or impotence).

The past two decades have witnessed a revolutionary transition in surgical technique and technology. Traditionally, surgeries had been performed in the open manner, in which large incisions were required for the surgeon to plainly observe and manipulate the surgical field. These incisions inevitably created significant patient trauma—substantial pain and suffering, extended recovery time, prolonged pain management and elevated costs.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Approximately 20 years ago, surgeons began practicing a new approach to performing surgery, an approach that came to be known as minimally invasive surgery, or MIS. During this era, tiny cameras in instruments called endoscopes or laparoscopes were introduced. These visual and surgical aids could be inserted in the patient's body through small ports.
